The two most pressing moral issues facing America in 2006 are abortion and homosexuality. Of the two, the former is actually easier to tell the truth about. Nobody likes the idea of killing babies, and yet that is exactly what abortion is. I praise God that more and more Americans are waking up to the horror of abortion.
With homosexuality, though, the issues are not so immediately clear. It is hard for many people to imagine how homosexual behavior actually harms anyone other than the gay couple, so many folks – even Christians – don’t have a problem with two men or two women being married. It’s my belief that that is an oversimplified and drastically shortsighted opinion. The long-term effects of creating something called “gay marriage” might well be disastrous for our society.
While I support the civil right of gay people to pursue their own private ends in their own private lives, I do not support the idea that the government should publicly legitimize such relationships by calling them “marriages.” Marriage is already in enough trouble in America. It does not need the mass confusion that will be engendered by our normalizing gay relations in the laws of our state. The judge and the legislators who are conspiring (so far, successfully) to undermine the long-established mores of the people of Maryland, as expressed in Maryland laws, are not helping. They’re hurting.

Let me be as clear as I can be. I love gay people. They are welcome to visit our church, and they are welcome to visit my home. I want to have lots of gay friends. But every one of them will hear me say what God says about the homosexual lifestyle, and every one will hear of the promise of freedom through Jesus Christ.
